Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is to equip students with strong quantitative and analytic tools for solving problems arising from human activities and environment. The Department offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Computer Science with a strong desire to provide a broad and balanced foundation in Mathematics and Computer sciences knowledge, and practical skills in preparation for a successive career and to provide a solid academic base upon which to build more advance degrees (M.Sc, Ph.D) if so desired.
The Department enjoys modern communication and information technology facilities available in the institution which are utilized to train students and equip them with academic and professional IT knowledge.
The vision of the undergraduate program in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is designed to provide the students with a sound, broad and balanced foundation in Mathematical and Computer knowledge and skills with courses which are oriented towards practical development. This is also built, to enable all students to move into the 20-2020 millennium goals of the Federal Government with the mathematical skills, understandings, and attitudes that they will need to be successful in their careers and daily lives.
To create a unique Department that is technologically and professionally sound as a model centre of excellence committed to the pursuit of academic innovation, skill-based training in Mathematical and Computer Sciences and making room for creative learning and cutting edge research that are internationally targeted at proffering solutions to specific human needs. Therefore our intentional policy is not just teaching students what to do but how to practically do it to solve human problems
The aim of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is to train and graduate students that are competent in the application of Mathematics Computer Science to solve relevant practical problems arising in the immediate Nigerian environment, with a view to transforming Nigeria and maintaining her as a functional scientific modern society. For this reason, students are brought up to achieve a high degree of competence in order to identify and solve problems in industry, government or other sectors of the economy. Any qualifier, by virtue of the training in logic and exact thinking, may venture into virtually any other discipline or endeavour and succeed
The main objectives of the undergraduate degree program in mathematics and Computer Science are to:
a. Provide students with a broad and balanced training in mathematics and practical skills in statistics and computer science.
b. Develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in mathematics and computer science
c. Develop in students, a range of transferable skills that are of value in mathematical and non-mathematical employment.
d. Provide students with knowledge and skills from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of mathematics and computer science or multi-disciplinary areas involving both areas.
e. Generates in students an appreciation of the importance of mathematics and computer science in industrial, economic, environmental, technology and social development.
f. Instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for mathematics and computer science, an appreciation of its application in different contexts and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
