It is with great joy that I welcome you all to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun on this historic occasion. First and foremost, I would like to express our profound appreciation to the Executive Governor, Honourable Ministers and our great visitors from Abuja who in spite of their tight schedules still accorded us the unique honour of gracing this occasion.
The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Nigeria was established in March 2007, under a Federal Government of Nigeria initiative to build a specialized university to produce unique high-level manpower and relevant expertise for the oil and gas sector in Nigeria and worldwide.
Globally, the petroleum resources industries play a dominant role in technology development and in Nigeria in particular, ninety per cent of the local revenue is derived from petroleum resources, and over ninety per cent of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings come from the sale of crude oil. Despite the central role the sector plays in wealth creation for the Nation, local participation in the petroleum industry is relatively very low. In order to arrest and dissuade capital flight, a local-content policy whose main objectives are to help develop capacity-building in Nigerian petroleum sector and to enable Nigerians participate actively in this important sector, was put in place by the Federal Government.
The establishment of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun is therefore the Federal Government’s deliberate effort to strengthen capacity in science and technology with special focus on petroleum resources and other allied sectors, in the Niger Delta area in particular, and in Nigeria and Africa in general.
The University has looked up to this historic day with eagerness and optimism. By this event of SOD-turning, there is a strident re-affirmation that the night is past and the dawn is almost here with us. This is a message of hope and is symbolic of our solemn rededication and commitment to the dream and aspirations of the founding fathers. Watch the slide show for a glimpse of the event.
