Center for Counselling

The Counselling and Human Development Center (CHDC) started as a unit, with two members of staff namely; Dr. (Mrs.) Maria Okocha and Dr. (Mrs.) Harriet Ayah under the Students’ Affairs Division in March 2012, with Prof.J. B. Arubayi as Dean, Students’ Affairs. On the 19th of February, 2016, the unit was formally inaugurated as Counselling and Human Development Centre with Dr. (Mrs.) Maria Okocha as the Head of Department, and four other members of staff. Presently, the Centre which has a total number of eight staffis located at the second floor, Block 1 of the new TETFUND building.

The Centre operates as a one-stop counselling platform providing competent counselling services for the University’s students across all disciplines, helping them to acquire creative academic and career development skills, innovations and to create awareness of relevant opportunities that exist for all graduates in the world of work.

To provide quality, integrated, seamless, accessible knowledge and skills for counselling students towards the development of effective and functional professional skills with focus on moral, intellectual, emotional, physical, social and psychological guidance in their various areas of endeavours.

1. To help students and other designated clients to explore career opportunities, gain career-related experiences and acquire skills that would enable them make successful transition after graduation.
2. To inform students on scholarships and other funding opportunities for self-development including on-campus employment opportunities.
3. To assist in students placements (IT/SIWES/TP/Clinical/Practicum) etc.
4. Assist students to clearly define and actualize their personal, social, academic and occupational goals.
5. Teach students to improve on their communication skills.
6. To develop leadership, interpersonal, social responsibility and other relevant skills.
7. To organise individual and group counselling sessions.
8. To organize orientation programmes for Fresh students at the beginning of each academic year.
9. To collaborate with the Entrepreneurship Centre of the university to provide entrepreneurial training for students thereby helping them to develop competent, creative and innovative skills for self-reliance.
10. To administer psychological testing and assessment of students where necessary.
11. To provide training for students to help them build leadership traits for future challenges
