The PR Unit was established on February 24th 2012 with the employment of Mr. Boniface Onyedi as the pioneer staff of the Unit and also the pioneer head, while the duo of Mr. Peter Ukwajunor and Mr. Henry Onoge were later employed in March and April of that same year.
The PR/Protocol Unit started as part of Management strategic effort to engage competent PR crisis management professionals to project a balanced and informative perspective on all issues during a crisis situation in the University. The goal was to deploy dynamic communication strategies in ameliorating the tension within the system and to build and sustain rapport with all publics thereby repositioning it for a hitch-free academic system.
Subsequently, the Unit began consolidating on that platform for effective PR activities until February 2014 when it moved into another phase with the appointment of four(4)additional PR staff namely: Mr. Victor Nwora, Mrs. Theresa Yegbeburu-Dawadokie, Mr. Ogbra Isaac and Mr. Tunde Aribasoye to widen the scope of operations of the Unit and consolidate on establishment of a more robust and viable PR Unit.
However, on Thursday 16th June, 2016, the Governing Council at its 34th meeting approved the proposal for the merging of the Protocol Unit with Community Relations office to create a full-fledged Public Relations Unit and appointed Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Abaka Oghenejode, J.P as the Head of the Unit.
