FUPRE SHINES GLOBALLY AS THREE SCHOLARS EMERGE AMONG THE WORLD’S TOP 2% SCIENTISTS IN 2025

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) has once again brought honour to Nigeria’s academic community as three of its scholars — Engr. Prof. Olusegun David Samuel, Dr. Modestus O. Okwu, and Dr. Elias E. Elemike — have been named among the world’s top 2% scientists in the prestigious Stanford University–Elsevier Global Ranking of Scientists (2025 edition).

The Stanford–Elsevier ranking evaluates researchers globally using Scopus data and a composite citation score that considers citations, h-index, co-authorship, and authorship position. The annual list covers 22 major scientific fields and 174 subfields, recognizing scholars who rank among the top 2% in their disciplines or within the top 100,000 researchers worldwide for consistent, high-impact contributions to global science.

This recognition highlights FUPRE’s growing research influence and reaffirms the university’s commitment to cutting-edge, solution-oriented scholarship that contributes to energy, environment, and technology advancement.

For Engr. Prof. Olusegun David Samuel, a renowned expert in Energy and Thermofluid Systems, this marks his third consecutive appearance on the global list. He described the recognition as “both humbling and inspiring,” attributing it to divine grace and the collaborative spirit of his mentors, colleagues, and students. His research focuses on sustainable energy and clean technologies, contributing to Nigeria’s transition toward green innovation.

Dr. Modestus O. Okwu, an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was recognized for his pioneering work in Robotics, Energy, and Digital Technologies. His research integrates artificial intelligence, automation, and renewable energy systems to address industrial and societal challenges. Dr. Okwu described the honour as “proof that with commitment, integrity, and innovation, world-class research can emerge from any university.”

In the field of Nanomaterials Chemistry, Dr. Elias E. Elemike has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most cited scientists. With over 100 publications spanning energy, environment, medicine, and agriculture, Dr. Elemike said the recognition validates years of focused research. “It shows that my work and contributions are relevant and impactful,” he noted, encouraging young researchers to “collaborate widely, stay curious, and pursue excellence.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ezekiel O. Agbalagba, described the recognition as a “landmark achievement” for both the university and the nation. “This honour shows that with focus, dedication, and innovation, Nigerian scholars can excel globally. Our university is proud of these distinguished researchers who continue to demonstrate the spirit of excellence and relevance that defines FUPRE,”
he said.

The inclusion of three FUPRE scholars among the world’s top 2% scientists underscores the university’s rising stature in petroleum engineering, energy systems, nanotechnology, and digital innovation. It affirms Nigeria’s growing contribution to global scientific progress and highlights FUPRE’s vision of being a leading centre for energy and technology research in Africa.

Through visionary leadership, collaborative partnerships, and purposeful research, FUPRE continues to power innovations that transform industries, communities, and the future.
